The art of supervision: considering student welfare, equality, diversity and inclusion

Our researcher development team is supporting the Wales Graduate School of Social Sciences (WGSSS) to run an online workshop (16 July 2024) on the supervision of PhD researchers.

The workshop is aimed at PhD supervisors and early career researchers who are involved in the supervision of WGSSS students. It will include sessions on student welfare and equality, diversity and inclusion.

Among the presenters will be Professor Ruth Northway FLSW, a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and Emeritus Professor of Learning Disability Nursing at the University of South Wales. She will discuss the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion [EDI] in relation to supervising and mentoring postgraduate researchers. This includes increasing their awareness of learning disabilities, strategies to avoid unconscious bias and how to ensure your student’s project and research consider EDI in the design.

We are also delighted to be joined by Lilian Yuet Ling Martin, who is the Diversity and Anti-racist Professional Learning Lead at University of Wales, Trinity St David.

Dr. Barbara Ibinarriaga Soltero, Researcher Development Manager at the LSW said: “We’re pleased to be collaborating with the WGSSS on this workshop.

“It will introduce some essential skills to the members of our ECR Network, for whom supervision of PhD students is likely to be a key aspect of their careers.

“We hope this is the first of many tie-ins with the WGSSS in what we hope could be a productive partnership.”
