Welsh Crucible is an award-winning programme of personal, professional and leadership development for the future research leaders of Wales.

Welsh Crucible recently established collaborative links with The Learned Society of Wales,  who in addition to contributing to the selection of Cruciblees, will support the programme and  promote recognition of its successes.

The 30 members for 2016 Welsh Crucible come from the Universities of Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Cardiff Metropolitan, Swansea and South Wales as well as The Bevan Commission.

Welsh Crucible enable participants :

• to widen their networks and create new and innovative collaborations with researchers in other disciplines.
• to transfer their knowledge to the public sphere to make an impact;
• to increase their innovative capacity amongst other highly promising research leaders of the future who are building their careers in Wales.
• to think creatively and innovatively in their work
• to better understand how research can impact on Society and how they could better communicate their work to a wider audience.

As in previous years, Cruciblees were selected through a competitive process in which they demonstrated their potential for excellence in research,  interest in interdisciplinary research,  collaboration and commitment to thinking about the wider impact of their work.

Fellows from the Learned Society of Wales contribute to the selection of potential Cruciblees, attend Crucible lab dinners, and contribute to the evaluation of competitive grant applications.

From 2016 the LSW will also be presenting  a ‘Welsh Crucible Prize’ to be awarded to the best completed grant projects assessed – the first of which will presented at the alumni conference and dinner in early 2017. This prize award will comprise a trophy, certificate, and a maximum award of up to £2,000 to be shared between the winning team .
