Celtic Academies Alliance

The Celtic Academies Alliance brings together the national academies of Ireland, Scotland and Wales to further promote and encourage co-operation, collaboration and shared learning across the three academic and research systems. 

Ireland, Scotland and Wales are steeped in the tradition of education and learning. A shared educational heritage remains a strong part of the relationship, and east-west collaboration is a prominent feature of the Irish, Welsh and Scottish academic and research systems. 

We believe that co-operation between the Royal Irish Academy, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Learned Society of Wales can foster improved collaboration on our joint interests and we propose to work on several common objectives. 

The aims of the Alliance are to: 

  • provide independent expert advice on higher education and research matters and on other shared key issues;
  • support the evolution of more effective intra-UK and UK–Ireland governance, especially in the post-Brexit context; and
  • work to ensure that the UK Government and its bodies take proper account of the needs and differing situations of the devolved nations, supporting communication and collaboration between the different levels of government. 

The Alliance has written submissions and responses to government initiatives and consultations, and conducted roundtables on research and development in the devolved nations.  

The Alliance also holds joint events, including a showcase of research from the Celtic nations, and a conference on research and innovation culture.
