Awards, Appointments and Lectures
Professor Bernard Schutz FLSW FRS, Professor in the School of Physics and Astronomy, Cardiff University, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Professor Schutz is a theoretical physicist, specialising in gravitational wave science.
Congratulations also to Professor Mike Edmunds, Emeritus Professor of Astrophysics, Cardiff University, who was recently elected as the next President of the Royal Astronomical Society. He will be president-elect for a year, and then serve as President from 2022 – 2024.
Professor W. John Morgan gave a Lecture to the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion on ‘Ben Bowen Thomas, Wales, and UNESCO’. The lecture explores the relationship between Thomas’ personal experience of adult education, social service, and liberal internationalism in Wales and his career at UNESCO.
Professor Val O’Donnell, who works on finding new types of lipids and understanding their impact on our health, has been awarded the Morton Lecture in the annual Biochemical Society awards.
And finally, War: How Conflict Shaped Us, by Honorary Fellow Professor Margaret MacMillan, was recently shortlisted for the 2021 Lionel Gelber Prize.
